Mario Kart World is still all about racing around tracks at its core, but there are some other things to look out for now. Most notably, this instalment is open-world, with dozens of collectables and challenges hidden across the map. And if you’re hoping to collect them all, you’ll want to learn how to wall ride sooner or later.

To wall ride is to drive on walls, which is necessary for some of the collectables available in free roam, and can also be used to tactically gain an edge on your opponents during a race. That said, wall riding isn’t any faster than driving on the track, but it’s one way to steer clear of enemy racers and show off some tricks to friends. Here’s how to wall ride in Mario Kart World to help you do just that.

How to drive on walls in Mario Kart World

To drive on walls in Mario Kart World, you want to perform a charged jump onto the wall. If you’re not familiar with charged jumps, take a look at our guide on how to jump in Mario Kart World.

Simply put, when you see a wall up ahead that you want to drive on, or know that one is in the upcoming track, you’ll want to charge a jump by holding ‘R’ as you accelerate towards the wall.

Once you’re ready to jump onto the wall, let go of ‘R’ and move in the direction that the wall is; you’ll briefly drive on the wall and receive a jump boost afterwards!

Riding on walls isn’t actually faster than riding on the track, but it is necessary for gathering certain collectable items in free-roam or accessing shortcuts when racing, so it’s worth practicing your charged jumps and wall rides whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Don’t forget that you can use the rewind function by pressing ‘down’ on your D-pad, which sends your character back in time temporarily, so you can easily practice perfecting that particular jump (or ensure you grab that Peach Medallion or Hidden Question Panel).
