Why Southeast Asia is a mobile gaming powerhouse

Southeast Asia (SEA) has grown into one of the world’s most important mobile-first gaming markets. This growth has been fuelled by affordable smartphones, accessible free-to-play games, expanding mobile connectivity, and a bustling social gaming culture, allowing mobile titles to reach audiences that consoles and gaming PCs simply cannot [1,3].

The same conditions have also helped create an enormous mobile esports ecosystem. Major esports tournaments attract millions of concurrent viewers, while games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Free Fire, and Arena of Valor have become part of mainstream youth culture across the region [1,4].

In this article, we will explore the numbers behind SEA’s booming gaming market, including the factors driving its mobile-first environment and how that popularity has translated into one of the world’s largest mobile esports audiences.

How big is Southeast Asia’s gaming market?

The Southeast Asian games market generated $5.37 billion in 2024, up 5.2% year-on-year. In September 2025, initial forecasts by Niko Partners estimated growth would slow to 1.8%, bringing the market to $5.47 billion that year [1].

However, its latest market model indicates that the region performed better than initially expected. According to the updated report on Aug. 4, 2026, SEA is now estimated to have generated more than $5.6 billion in gaming revenue in 2025, representing 4.7% year-on-year growth [2].

Accordingly, the market is now on track to exceed $5.9 billion in 2026 and reach approximately $7 billion by 2030, representing a 4.8% compound annual growth rate over five years. This is despite continuing economic and political challenges in parts of the region [2].

Why Southeast Asia became a mobile-first gaming market

SEA is a highly competitive market for global mobile gaming, with a highly engaged and expanding player base. According to Mordor Intelligence, mobile gaming accounted for 70.78% of Southeast Asia’s gaming revenue in 2025 [3].

A major reason behind this success is arguably the accessible entry point to gaming. For example, smartphones serve not only as gaming and communication tools but are also affordable and portable, reducing the need to purchase dedicated consoles or expensive gaming PCs.

Android devices and increasingly widespread mobile connectivity have further expanded access, particularly in countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. At the same time, free-to-play games can reach players without high upfront costs that are often a barrier for players in developing markets [3].

Note: Mordor Intelligence and Niko Partners use different market definitions and estimation models. Mordor Intelligence’s platform share should therefore not be applied directly to Niko Partners’ SEA-6 revenue estimates.

Mobile dominates gaming activity in Southeast Asia

According to Deloitte’s Let’s Play! report, mobile accounted for nearly 55% of all gaming hours in SEA, making it the region’s dominant platform. Mobile is also central to how audiences discover and watch esports, with YouTube Gaming and Facebook Gaming playing a larger role than Twitch in the region [4].

Sensor Tower’s broader State of Mobile Southeast Asia 2026 report further illustrates the scale of the region’s mobile economy. Across all app categories, SEA generated 18.1 billion downloads in 2025, ranking second globally for both downloads and time spent. In-app purchase (IAP) revenue also increased by 16.3% year-on-year to a record $5.3 billion [5].

However, these figures cover the entire mobile-app market, including streaming, finance, shopping, and other non-gaming categories. Sensor Tower’s Q1 2025 report remains the latest publicly available breakdown of SEA-wide mobile-game downloads and revenue [5,6].

SEA recorded almost 2 billion mobile-game downloads in one quarter

In Q1 2025 alone, SEA recorded 1.93 billion new mobile-game installs, making it the second-largest market globally by downloads. That represented a 3% increase from Q4 2024 [6].

Despite its massive download volume, SEA generated $625 million in mobile-game IAP revenue, ranking seventh globally. This gap reflects one of the defining characteristics of SEA mobile gaming: the region delivers huge reach, but considerably lower spending per player [6].

It also suggests that publishers still have significant monetization headroom as smartphone adoption, digital payment infrastructure, and disposable income improve.

Note: Sensor Tower’s download estimates cover the Apple App Store and Google Play, excluding pre-installs, re-downloads, and third-party Android stores. Its revenue figures cover in-app purchases made through those stores and exclude advertising revenue, direct payments through developers’ websites, and third-party storefronts [6].

Indonesia leads downloads, while Thailand leads revenue

Sensor Tower reported that Indonesia was by far the largest SEA market for mobile game downloads in Q1 2025, recording 870 million installs, up 9% from the previous quarter. That was roughly 45% of all Southeast Asian mobile game downloads during the quarter [6].

In terms of mobile-game IAP revenue, Thailand generated $162 million in Q1 2025, the highest among SEA markets. Indonesia and Malaysia followed with $118 million and $103 million in revenue, respectively — a clear indication that audience size and spending do not necessarily move together [6].

Indonesia recorded substantially more downloads than Thailand, but Thailand generated approximately $44 million more in IAP revenue. Singapore also produces relatively strong spending despite its much smaller population [6].

Gaming is already mainstream in Southeast Asia

Gaming penetration is genuinely high across much of Asia, but SEA stands out particularly strongly in that picture [7].

Niko Partners estimates that the six principal SEA gaming markets – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam – had about 290 million players in 2025. Its latest forecast indicates that the total will surpass 300 million in 2026, with Indonesia alone accounting for over 126 million players [1,2].

What makes it even more interesting is that alternative estimates are considerably higher.

For example, Digital in Asia estimates that at least 75% of internet users play games in five of the six markets, with Thailand slightly behind at 71%. However, its figures draw on multiple datasets and rely on upper-range estimates, so they should not be compared directly with Niko Partners’ market model [7].

Southeast Asia has a large, young esports audience

SEA’s esports audience remains slightly male-skewed, although the gender imbalance is not overwhelming.

According to Deloitte, women account for 43% of esports viewers surveyed across six SEA markets, compared with 57% for men [4].

The audience is also heavily concentrated among younger generations. Deloitte found that Millennials (46%) and Gen Z (35%) collectively account for roughly four-fifths of all SEA esports viewers. The remaining demographic comprises Gen X (15%) and viewers aged 59 or older (4%) [4].

This makes younger audiences the primary demographic driving esports consumption, social engagement, and commercial interest across the region.

Esports awareness does not always translate into regular viewership

Deloitte found an average esports term-awareness rate of 94% across the six SEA markets, higher than Europe’s 85% in the same study. This meant that nearly all SEA respondents recognized the term “esports,” though they did not necessarily define it correctly [4].

However, awareness does not guarantee active engagement. Across the surveyed sample, 75% had watched professional esports at least once, 46% had watched during the previous six months, and 31% watched at least once per week during that six-month period [4].

Approximately 45% of the regular audience watches at least seven hours of esports per week, including 30% who watch for more than 10 hours [4].

Vietnam converts esports awareness into regular viewers

Among the SEA countries, Vietnam is the most active esports market, recording a 94% term-awareness rate and the region’s highest regular viewership at 59%. By comparison, Singapore recorded 91% term awareness, but only 18% of respondents watched esports regularly [4].

This suggests that the region’s esports opportunity is not simply about creating awareness. In markets such as Singapore and Thailand, the greater challenge is converting people who recognize or occasionally watch esports into consistent viewers.

Deloitte reports that esports reached more Vietnamese respondents than soccer. Now, this does not mean esports has universally replaced soccer as Vietnam’s national sport, but it does demonstrate how firmly competitive gaming has entered the country’s mainstream entertainment habits [4].

The Vietnamese audience is also geographically dispersed. Only 17% of Vietnamese esports viewers surveyed lived in cities with populations exceeding 100,000, according to Deloitte’s country profile [4].

Which mobile games dominate Southeast Asia?

Mobile titles heavily influence the SEA gaming market, but the dominant games vary by country.

Niko Partners identified Mobile Legends: Bang Bang as the leading mobile title in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, while Arena of Valor (known locally as RoV in Thailand and Liên Quân Mobile in Vietnam) holds a particularly strong position in those two markets [1].

Free Fire also maintains a substantial audience across the region, especially among players who use lower-specification smartphones.

However, these titles have different strengths. Free Fire has frequently delivered enormous download reach, while Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has developed a deeper regional competitive ecosystem built around domestic leagues, international tournaments, and long-term audience engagement [1,6].

Conclusion

Southeast Asia became a mobile gaming powerhouse primarily because mobile devices made gaming accessible to an enormous, highly social population. The combination of affordable smartphones, free-to-play titles, improving connectivity, and local payment options created the conditions for hundreds of millions of people to play [1,2,3].

However, accessibility alone does not explain the region’s success. Leading mobile games have also sustained their popularity through localized content, community features, domestic leagues, and campaigns that reflect the cultures of individual SEA markets [1,6].

The result is a region that combines enormous download volume with one of the most developed mobile esports ecosystems in the world. Although player spending remains relatively low compared with several mature gaming markets, SEA’s scale, engagement, and improving monetization make it one of the most important growth markets in global gaming [2,4,6].
