The upcoming sequel to 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie looks to have accidentally had its name revealed early, thanks to NBCUniversal making a goof with a press release. The film will seemingly be going by Super Mario World, not to be confused with the classic 90s SNES game.

We first learned that this sequel was coming in March last year, as Nintendo, Universal and co unsurprisingly decided to double down on the big hit. This year’s Minecraft Movie has only further marked that call out as a no-brainer, as game adaptations continue to make huge bank at the box office.

Now, as spotted by Wario64, NBCUniversal has put out a press release citing Super Mario World among a list of upcoming films from Universal Pictures and Illumination that will eventually be released on its Peacock streaming service.

The reference to Mario was quickly scrubbed, pointing to it having been an error of some kind to chuck it in alongside the likes of Shrek, Minions, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale – all films that cater to the exact same audience (ok, maybe not). That’d be Shrek 5 and Minions 3, by the way, potentially suggesting Super Mario World might not be this sequel’s final title, if it turns out the company only meant the Mario movie IP as a whole.

That said, as folks have pointed out, Super Mario World could make perfect sense as the title if the SNES game and the events of the first Mario movie’s post-credits scene offer clues here.

Warning: Spoilers for The Super Mario Movie lie ahead.

That post-credits scene offered a quick look at a polka-dotted egg starting to hatch – likely teasing a Yoshi debut. Super Mario World on the SNES marked Yoshi’s game debut in the long-running series that he’s gone on to become a staple of as we’ve hopped, leaped, and jumped from the 90s to 2025.

Plus, it’d also fit nicely with the latest edition of Mario Kart set to drop with the Switch 2 this summer being dubbed Mario Kart World. Accidental corporate synergy maybe, but hey.

Wait! Will this next Mario movie have cinema-goers demanding that prices be dropped? Given the kind of theatre shenanigans the Minecraft Movie’s spawned, who knows.

While you wait to see if Super Mario World is confirmed as the sequel’s name, make sure to check out our review of the first film.

DoorDash’s new AI chatbot lets you order with prompts and photos https://gaming.vmondeika.com/doordashs-new-ai-chatbot-lets-you-order-with-prompts-and-photos/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/doordashs-new-ai-chatbot-lets-you-order-with-prompts-and-photos/#respond Fri, 12 Jun 2026 01:29:44 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/doordashs-new-ai-chatbot-lets-you-order-with-prompts-and-photos/ [ad_1]

DoorDash announced on Thursday that it’s launching a new AI chatbot that lets users order food and groceries with text prompts and photos in its latest AI push.

The chatbot, called “Ask DoorDash,” allows users to search the app for what they’re looking for in their own words instead of having to scroll through restaurants and stores to build a cart. You can tell the chatbot what you’re in the mood for, share a recipe link to find the items, or describe the reservation you’re looking for.

“Traditional search works best when you know the exact restaurant or table you’re looking for,” DoorDash wrote in the blog post. “Ask DoorDash is designed for the moments when you don’t.”

Food delivery apps and tech giants are betting that AI can help make shopping more conversational and personalized, as companies race to make AI assistants a standard part of everyday life. In February, Uber Easts launched an AI-powered “Cart Assistant,” while Instacart has rolled out an AI shopping assistant that grocers can offer to their customers.

DoorDash’s app can build your grocery cart based on a photo from a cookbook, a picture of your grocery list, or a recipe. DoorDash will then add all the items and their correct quantities to your cart. It will prompt users to check if they already have staples like sugar and butter, so they don’t buy something they already have.

You can also ask the chatbot to reorder your last grocery cart or suggest new items based on your previous orders, DoorDash says.

As for ordering food, you can tell the chatbot that you want a “filling dinner for a family of 4.” The app will then surface restaurants alongside a personalized blurb explaining why it matches your search. You can narrow the results even further with a query like, “Show me kid-friendly vegetarian spots with mild options.”

Once you select a place, you can ask DoorDash to build a cart with suggestions based on your dietary preferences, budget, group size, or past orders.

With Ask DoorDash for Reservations, users can ask the chatbot to find a “table for two downtown for a date-night dinner around 8 PM.” The app will then surface restaurants with availability. You can refine the results further by asking for something a little more intimate.

The chatbot is rolling out on iOS in select regions for restaurant search and grocery shopping, and within DoorDash Reservations. It will reach more users across the U.S. in the coming weeks, the company says.

TL;DR

Reddit launched video comments for all users in public SFW communities. Videos don’t autoplay and are checked by safety systems before posting.

Reddit has launched video comments for all users. The feature lets any Redditor upload or record a short-form video reply directly in the comments of any post. It rolls out across all public, safe-for-work communities starting Thursday.

A video icon now appears alongside the existing image and GIF options in the comment box. Users can either upload an existing video or record one in place. Videos do not autoplay. Reddit’s safety systems check video comments before they are posted.

We are continually evolving Reddit to deliver a more immersive and authentic human experience,” said Chief Product Officer Maria Angelidou-Smith. “The ability to reply with video gives users more creative ways to engage in communities they love.

The 💜 of EU tech

The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol’ founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It’s free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now!

The feature has been in limited testing. Reddit pointed to a video AMA with Mel C from the Spice Girls, conducted two months ago, as an example of the intended use case. Celebrity and expert AMAs are a natural fit: a host can record personalised video responses to individual questions in the thread.

Reddit’s user base has traditionally favoured anonymity and text-based discussion. There is no requirement that a posted video show the user’s face. In practice, video comments are likely to become another meme format, with users replying to posts with reaction clips rather than showing themselves on camera.

Subreddit moderators can disable the feature for their communities. Only public, SFW subreddits are eligible. Private and NSFW communities are excluded.

The launch reflects Reddit’s broader push to become a more visual platform as it competes for engagement with TikTok and YouTube. Reddit’s share price has risen sharply since its 2024 IPO, driven in part by its role as a training data source for AI models. Adding video to comments increases time on platform and creates more content, both of which support ad revenue and the data licensing deals that have become a growing part of its business.

A team of researchers at Georgia Tech has developed a new smartphone-based system that could dramatically simplify how people interact with robots. Called COBALT, the platform allows users with little to no computing experience to remotely control robot arms from virtually anywhere in the world using just a phone and an internet connection.

The project, developed at Georgia Tech’s People, AI & Robotics (PAIR) Lab, transforms smartphones into motion controllers for robotic arms. Users simply move their phones in different directions, and the robot mirrors those movements in real time. Basic tasks such as grabbing, moving, and releasing objects can be performed through simple on-screen controls, making the experience feel more like playing a mobile game than operating industrial machinery.

Ayush Agarwal, a Ph.D. student in Georgia Tech’s School of Interactive Computing who leads the COBALT research team, said the system was intentionally designed to make robotics accessible to beginners rather than experts. During testing, participants from countries including India, Indonesia, and Pakistan remotely controlled robot arms located inside Georgia Tech’s lab despite having no prior robotics experience.

Researchers believe crowdsourcing could shape the future of robotics

The broader goal behind COBALT extends beyond convenience. Researchers believe the platform could solve one of robotics’ biggest challenges: collecting enough real-world training data to improve AI-powered robotic systems.

Modern robots require enormous amounts of policy training data to learn how to perform physical tasks reliably. According to Assistant Professor Animesh Garg, who directs the PAIR Lab, simulation alone is not enough to train robots for large-scale deployment. Instead, researchers envision a crowdsourced network where millions of smartphone users passively contribute operational data by remotely interacting with robots.

Garg compared the idea to tapping into the nearly five billion smartphone users worldwide. By lowering the barrier to entry, the team hopes to create a scalable global system capable of accelerating robotic learning and automation.

The technology could also have major educational implications. Georgia Tech researchers recently demonstrated COBALT to students from Midtown High School in Atlanta, allowing them to remotely operate robot arms using smartphones. The simplicity of the interface could make robotics education more accessible in classrooms without expensive equipment or specialized hardware.

A future “gig economy” for robots may not be far away

The researchers also believe COBALT could eventually support entirely new forms of remote work. Garg described the possibility of a robot-powered gig economy where people remotely operate assistive robots in homes, warehouses, or factories from anywhere in the world.

In practical terms, that could mean a factory robot autonomously handles most tasks but requests human assistance when it encounters a difficult situation. Instead of requiring on-site workers, remote operators could briefly take control through their phones before handing the operation back to the AI system.

Agarwal said user studies showed smartphones were preferred over VR headsets, keyboards, or traditional controllers because they felt more intuitive while still providing high-quality control data. The system also minimizes latency by using WebRTC technology, similar to platforms like Zoom and Google Meet, ensuring that robot movements and live video streams remain responsive even across long distances.

The research paper on COBALT is being presented this week at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Vienna, where the team is showcasing not just the technology itself, but the large-scale remote operation network built around it.

Google Meet’s AI note-taker now lets you customize your meeting notes and track decisions https://gaming.vmondeika.com/google-meets-ai-note-taker-now-lets-you-customize-your-meeting-notes-and-track-decisions/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/google-meets-ai-note-taker-now-lets-you-customize-your-meeting-notes-and-track-decisions/#respond Fri, 05 Jun 2026 23:36:19 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/google-meets-ai-note-taker-now-lets-you-customize-your-meeting-notes-and-track-decisions/ [ad_1]

If you have ever sat through a Google Meet call and later struggled to figure out what was actually decided, Google just made your life a little easier. The company has rolled out a meaningful upgrade to its “Take notes for me” feature, giving you more control over what gets captured and making it easier to track outcomes after the meeting wraps up.

Meeting notes just got a serious upgrade. 📝

— Google Workspace (@GoogleWorkspace) June 5, 2026

What’s new in “Take notes for me” feature?

The biggest addition here is the ability to toggle specific sections of your meeting notes on or off during the call itself. From the in-call menu, you can now choose which of the four sections you want included: Summary, Decisions, Next Steps, or Details. These toggles only apply to your current meeting and do not change your default settings for future calls.

The Summary section has also been tightened up. It is now designed to be more concise and scannable, so you can catch up on the key points of a meeting quickly without having to wade through a wall of text.

What is the new Decisions section and how can it help you?

The Decisions section is the most interesting part of this update. Rather than just listing what was discussed, it explicitly tracks the outcome of each decision with a status label. Those labels are Aligned, Needs Further Discussion, Disagreed, and Shelved.

So instead of scanning through a long notes doc to figure out where things landed, you get a clear snapshot of what was resolved and what still needs work. For now, the Decisions section is only available in English. We can expect more languages to be added in the future.

The update is available for Enterprise Standard and Plus, Business Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education subscribers, as well as Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

God of War Laufey lets you play as Kratos’ dead wife and befriend a gelatinous cube https://gaming.vmondeika.com/god-of-war-laufey-lets-you-play-as-kratos-dead-wife-and-befriend-a-gelatinous-cube/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/god-of-war-laufey-lets-you-play-as-kratos-dead-wife-and-befriend-a-gelatinous-cube/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 23:33:57 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/god-of-war-laufey-lets-you-play-as-kratos-dead-wife-and-befriend-a-gelatinous-cube/

Sony Santa Monica has revealed their next project, and the next chapter in the God of War saga, taking the rather unexpected direction of letting you play as someone other than Kratos. How about… Kratos’ dead wife?

That’s right, the rumours were true and the next God of War game lets you play as Kratos’ dead wife, Faye, aka Laufey the Just (portrayed once more by Deborah Ann Woll), who is surprisingly nimble for someone we last saw being barbecued. In fact, it opens with Kratos and Atreus laying her to rest in the woods, but as her spirit floats off, she awakens not within the Norse afterlife, but somewhere completely different. This is the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, where all magic comes from and where it returns to.

But she doesn’t get a greeting befitting of a god. No, the plantlife starts to attack her, and she soon comes face to face with Sekmet from the Egyptian pantheon of gods, and Begtse, the god of war from Tibetan mythology, who have her thrown into captivity. There she meets a talking gelatinous cube called Phranque (Jack Quaid), and the ribbons of a sword called Rue (Perlina Lau), which is a turn for the even more bizarre. They are the ones who reveal that this is the afterlife of the gods, as opposed to one specific mythology, and spur Faye on to rediscovering control of her powers and breaking out.

Wwith Rue’s sword in grasp – for better or worse, given the repeated warnings about this – she unleashes some fantastic fighting abilities, including a ribbon-whipping move, the ability to punch someone’s soul of their body with the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, and then stab that a bit instead, and great finishers. She’s fast and nimble, able to combine ground attacks with aerial ones.

Here’s more on how Santa Monica has created the character of Faye for her very own game.

There’s some truly titanic battling from this point in the reveal, really showing the scale and scope of what the PS5 can achieve in the battle with Begtse.

It looks excellent and we can’t wait to see more!

New Microsoft tool lets devs spin up AI behavior tests using text descriptions https://gaming.vmondeika.com/new-microsoft-tool-lets-devs-spin-up-ai-behavior-tests-using-text-descriptions/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/new-microsoft-tool-lets-devs-spin-up-ai-behavior-tests-using-text-descriptions/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 19:02:37 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/new-microsoft-tool-lets-devs-spin-up-ai-behavior-tests-using-text-descriptions/ [ad_1]

AI researchers and labs have advanced by leaps and bounds in evaluating AI models for everything from safety and compliance to sycophancy and alignment. But it appears companies and developers are faced with a new, specific need: making sure that their AI system behaves as intended for their specific product or service.

In a bid to make that testing process simpler, Microsoft on Tuesday took the wraps off ASSERT, short for Adaptive Spec-driven Scoring for Evaluation and Regression Testing.

The open-source framework, Microsoft says, makes evaluating application-specific AI behavior easy by using AI to turn high-level, natural-language descriptions of goals, policies, or intended behaviors into thorough, scored tests that can be investigated.

ASSERT takes plain-language descriptions of an AI model’s expected behavior and policies, turns them into a structured set of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, generates problem scenarios and test cases, runs them against the target system, and scores the results. It can also record the paths the AI system takes, including intermediate actions and tool calls, so developers can inspect where failures happen.

Devs can provide system context, tools, and constraints, too, if they want to further customize what the evaluations cover.

For example, a developer could specify that a document research AI agent shouldn’t send emails to people outside the company, limit confidential information to C-level executives, and provide concise summaries with prior context in mind. ASSERT will use those rules to generate test cases that check whether the system follows those rules on an ongoing basis.

The framework, according to Microsoft, fills a gap that broader, more general evaluations cannot when AI models are intended to behave in a manner that is shaped by an application or product’s context, policies, and tools.

“One of the things we’ve learned is that evaluations are absolutely critical to making good decisions,” said Sarah Bird, chief product officer of Responsible AI at Microsoft. “Because if you don’t understand the behavior of the AI system, it’s really hard to know if it’s meeting your organization’s bar […] What we found is that if you really want to have a trustworthy system, you should evaluate many more dimensions that are application-specific.”

Bird said ASSERT can be used to evaluate systems when they’re being built, after deployment, and even for continuous monitoring.

The release comes amidst a gradual but broader shift in the AI industry. As models grow more capable, researchers are focusing on repeatable testing and regression checks, with Stanford’s HELM, MLCommons’ AILuminate, and evaluation groups like METR rolling out benchmarks to measure how models behave under different conditions.

X app now lets you directly record reaction-style videos and outrage at just about anything https://gaming.vmondeika.com/x-app-now-lets-you-directly-record-reaction-style-videos-and-outrage-at-just-about-anything/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/x-app-now-lets-you-directly-record-reaction-style-videos-and-outrage-at-just-about-anything/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 09:57:40 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/x-app-now-lets-you-directly-record-reaction-style-videos-and-outrage-at-just-about-anything/ [ad_1]

If you have spent any time scrolling Instagram Reels or TikToks, you have come across a video format in which a creator overlays their video on top of the content they are talking about. This has become a popular format with creators, as these videos often go viral.

X, a platform that has become a home for unnecessary outrage, wants to ride this wave of trendy reaction videos by allowing users to record them directly inside the app. The feature lets creators react with video on X posts, giving them even more opportunity to express themselves.

Commentary is one of the most important pillars of X. And sometimes the best way to share your thoughts is with video.

Today we’re launching a whole new way to make them:
React with Video

Tap the repost button and start recording with green screen, split screen, or… pic.twitter.com/iF3f8wctbK

— Nikita Bier (@nikitabier) June 2, 2026

If you ever felt that a text reply wasn’t enough to express your outrage, this new feature will be right up your alley.

How does React with Video work?

The feature dubbed “React with Video” appears as one of the options in an overlay menu when you hit the Repost button on a post. When you tap on it, X opens the post in the background with your video overlayed at the top.

You can then hit the record button and start recording your thoughts. I like that you get the option to pause the recording, giving you ample time to recollect your thoughts. Once you are finished recording your thoughts, you can hit the checkmark button to preview your content.

If you are happy with the result, you can post it as a reaction reply to the original post.

What are your options when reacting with video?

It seems that X has put considerable thought into developing this feature, giving users ample customization options. By default, your video appears as an overlay, where X automatically removes your background. You can resize the video and move it to any part of the screen.

If the original post has media attached, you can choose to make it full-screen and hide the text. This will come in handy if you want to focus more on the image than the post’s text. You can also choose to show your video in other styles, including picture-in-picture and split-screen modes.

If you love making reaction videos, this will considerably decrease the effort required to create them. As for why anyone would choose to spend time on such an endeavor, that’s a question only they can answer.

Tencent lets PayPal users pay via WeChat QR codes in China https://gaming.vmondeika.com/tencent-lets-paypal-users-pay-via-wechat-qr-codes-in-china/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/tencent-lets-paypal-users-pay-via-wechat-qr-codes-in-china/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 04:47:04 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/tencent-lets-paypal-users-pay-via-wechat-qr-codes-in-china/ [ad_1]

TL;DR

Tencent will let PayPal users make cashless payments in China through WeChat Pay’s QR code merchant network, starting with US users. The move targets foreign tourists who struggle with China’s cashless economy, as visitor numbers surpass 35 million.

Tencent has announced that PayPal users will be able to make cashless payments in China by scanning QR codes through WeChat Pay’s merchant network. The integration, which will be available to US-based PayPal users first with more markets to follow, connects PayPal’s 400 million-plus user base to the payment infrastructure that covers virtually every taxi, restaurant, and shop in mainland China.

The move addresses a specific pain point. China’s economy runs on mobile payments, with WeChat Pay and Ant Group’s Alipay processing trillions of dollars in transactions annually. Foreign visitors who arrive without access to either platform often find themselves unable to pay for basic goods and services, since many Chinese merchants no longer accept cash and few accept international credit cards at the point of sale. Both WeChat Pay and Alipay have allowed foreigners to link international bank cards since 2019, but adoption has been limited by a cumbersome onboarding process that requires downloading Chinese apps and navigating interfaces designed for domestic users.

Why PayPal matters

PayPal integration sidesteps the onboarding problem entirely. A US tourist arriving in Beijing does not need to download WeChat, create an account, or link a bank card to a Chinese payment platform. They scan a WeChat Pay QR code with their existing PayPal app, the transaction processes through WeChat Pay’s merchant network, and the charge appears on their PayPal balance or linked card. The friction reduction is significant for a demographic that currently struggles with China’s cashless infrastructure.

Tencent is also waiving transaction fees for first-time users who link international bank cards directly to WeChat, a separate incentive aimed at encouraging deeper integration beyond the PayPal pathway. The company reported that foreign traveller transactions in China jumped nearly 80% year on year in the January-to-April period of 2026, suggesting that China’s broader tourism push is already driving payment volume growth.

China’s tourism strategy

The PayPal deal is part of a coordinated effort by Beijing to attract more foreign tourists after the pandemic-era collapse in international arrivals. China has expanded visa-free access to travellers from dozens of countries, including the UK, Spain, and Australia, though US travellers still require a visa except for brief transits to third countries.

The strategy is working by the numbers. Foreign visitors to China, excluding those from Hong Kong and Taiwan, surpassed 35 million in 2025, exceeding the pre-pandemic record of nearly 32 million set in 2019. Tourism contributed more than 4% of China’s GDP in 2024. China’s approach to technology adoption has created an economy where digital infrastructure is more advanced than in most Western countries, but that very advancement creates barriers for visitors who are not part of the domestic digital ecosystem.

Gary Ng, a senior economist for Asia Pacific at French bank Natixis, said the move aligns with a global trend of payment platform integration through mutually recognised cross-border QR codes. The same dynamic is playing out in Southeast Asia, where Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia have established bilateral QR code payment links.

Limited near-term impact

The practical significance of the PayPal integration depends on the volume of US travellers to China, which remains relatively low compared to pre-pandemic levels and is further constrained by the ongoing visa requirement. Ivan Su, a senior equity analyst at Morningstar, said the initial impact may be limited in terms of overall benefit for Tencent given those volumes.

The competitive dynamic between WeChat Pay and Alipay adds another dimension. As fintech platforms globally expand into cross-border payments, both Chinese platforms are racing to be the preferred gateway for foreign visitors. Alipay has its own international partnerships and has been more aggressive in marketing to tourists through in-app translation features and curated city guides. Alibaba’s broader technology ambitions give Alipay a parent company with deep resources to invest in cross-border payment infrastructure.

For Tencent, the PayPal deal is less about immediate revenue and more about positioning WeChat Pay as the default payment rail for international visitors. Chinese platform companies are navigating a regulatory environment that encourages international engagement while maintaining domestic control over data and financial flows. Connecting PayPal to WeChat Pay’s merchant network threads that needle, giving foreign users access to the payment infrastructure without giving them direct access to the underlying Chinese financial system.

Let’s discuss The Last of Us episode five https://gaming.vmondeika.com/lets-discuss-the-last-of-us-episode-five/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/lets-discuss-the-last-of-us-episode-five/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 00:11:02 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/lets-discuss-the-last-of-us-episode-five/

Last week, I said that episode four of The Last of Us was clearly setting the stage for something bigger, and, oh boy, was I right.

As with previous episodes, episode five (known as Endure and Survive) is brilliantly acted by all involved. The show continues to blur the line between good and bad: if you do bad things for a good reason, does that make you a bad person? Or does it all depend on whose lens you see a story through?

This episode sees a definite pick up in action and momentum for Joel and Ellie’s story, and as always leaves plenty of things for us to pick apart and discuss. Let’s get into it.

THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BOTH THE SHOW AND THE GAME SERIES IT IS BASED ON. ADDITIONALLY, THERE ARE DISCUSSIONS OF SUICIDE BELOW. PLEASE READ ON AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.

A little preview for episode five.Watch on YouTube

While episode five stays largely faithful to the game’s story, there are a few notable differences I would like to jump straight into, particularly Henry and Sam’s backstory.

In the game, the brothers are trying to make it out of Pittsburgh alive while being chased down by the city’s merciless hunters. Save for some mentions of other members from their original group, that is really about as deep as their backstory goes.

In the show, however, we spend some quality time with Henry and his younger brother Sam (played by Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Woodard respectively) before their eventual meeting and alliance with Joel and Ellie.

In the episode’s opening scenes, we learn that Henry is wanted by the Kansas City revolutionaries (namely Kathleen) because he gave inforamtion about the rebellion to FEDRA. He became what the revolutionaries call a “rat” or a “collaborator”. The reason he did this, it transpires, was to help his younger brother.

Prior to FEDRA’s demise in the city, Sam was diagnosed with leukaemia, and FEDRA had the necessary drugs to help him. This meant Henry was forced to make a choice: work with FEDRA for the medicine, or let his brother suffer. As I already said, the show is steadily blurring the lines about what makes a person good or bad – although Henry feels he knows where he sits on the morality scale.

“The answer is easy: I am the bad guy, because I did a bad guy thing,” Henry tells Joel during a quiet moment of the episode.

Those who know the game will appreciate this comment acts as a deft bit of foreshadowing for things to come further down the line.

Another significant change is that Sam in the show is considerably younger than his game counterpart, and he is deaf. This means Sam is not only reliant on his older brother for medication, but also for his understanding of others in the world around him.

Henry communicates with Sam via sign language throughout the episode, and others speak to Sam via Henry. While I should say I enjoyed this episode very much, sometimes I found other characters’ presence around Sam a little frustrating. The doctor from episode four shows up in this episode as well, and I very much felt that he was only ever communicating with Sam through Henry, rather than directly with him.

This trend is wonderfully bucked by Ellie, however. While Ellie does not understand or use sign language herself, she engages with Sam throughout the episode without Henry’s help, be it by the two children writing notes to each other or thanks to a wonderful expressions and energy.

The two younger members of the group form a really beautiful bond with each other throughout this episode, sharing an infectious enthusiasm for comics (the same comics players can find in the game) and playing football and such together. These moments echo similar game moments, and this joyful innocence makes the episode’s ultimate conclusion even more heartbreaking.

Bella Ramsey and Keivonn Woodard bring a real warmth and humanity to their characters here, and deserve praise for ensuring viewers both invest in and believe in their relationship in a relatively short amount of time.

Another change from the game is the continuing story of the Kansas City revolutionaries, along with leader Kathleen and her right hand man Perry.

Again, Melanie Lynskey does a nice job of portraying a character who, at first glance, seems almost meek. However, she clearly has a ruthlessness within her. Her motivations are revealed further in this episode, when she returns to her childhood home and shares that her brother was the former leader of the revolutionary movement in Kansas City, and the very person Henry handed over to FEDRA for his own brother’s medication.

Kathleen’s story mirrors many of the actions of our ‘heroes’ and, again, this makes us question who really is ‘good’ and ‘bad’ in any given situation. Perspective can really make all the difference on how we perceive a character.

I love the contrast between Kathleen and Jeffery Pierce’s Perry in this episode. Perry may visually look the more commanding of the two, with his body armour and array of weapons clearly on show – he looks like a soldier. Kathleen, in comparison, looks almost dowdy, with a lone pistol and simple anorak.

But despite their respective ‘book covers’, Kathleen is very much the one in charge. When Perry questions if finding Henry right away is the best use of their time, Kathleen affirms that it is, and Perry relents. Kathleen will easily put Perry into place if he steps out of line.

As I said, despite these notable changes above, the show does follow a very similar structure to the Pittsburgh section of the game. Joel, Henry, Ellie and Sam all flee from those hunting them by going through tunnels under the city.

In a nice nod to the game, the group comes across the remains of an underground community hidden within these tunnels. “I’d heard about places like this,” Joel tells Ellie. “People went underground after outbreak day and built settlements.”

In the game, players can come across a series of notes that reveal the tragic story of one such underground community, run by a former fisherman named Ish.

Sadly, despite their community thriving for a while, the infected eventually penetrated this underground commune, leaving Ish and his fellow survivors dead for some time before Joel and Ellie arrive on the scene. This whole story can be easily missed, as it is all told through optional collectibles, but it is one that further expands on the world of The Last of Us.

Personally, I wish the show had expanded on this story a little more, as I loved finding those notes in the game. However, I am still thrilled the showrunners included it at all.

Back to the show. When Joel, Henry, Ellie and Sam all make it out of the underground tunnels, they pop up in the suburbs of Kansas City, much like they make it to the Pittsburgh suburbs in the game.

The next few scenes are a brilliant recreation of this same point in the game, albeit at a different time of day. As the four make their way through the seemingly abandoned streets, they are soon shot at by a sniper stationed in one of the houses down the way. Joel, leaving the group, manages to sneak around and confront the sniper at his vantage point, as he does in the game.

The show delivers us with another morality pang here, as the Kansas City sniper turns out to be an elderly gentleman and at first Joel does not want to kill him. In fact, he tries to give the sniper (later revealed to be called Anthony) a chance to surrender. However, Anthony turns on Joel, resulting in Joel reluctantly killing him. Joel then takes control of the sniper’s weapon as chaos lets loose on the streets below.

And what chaos, I hear you ask. Well, chaos that is both incredible and terrifying, as Kathleen, Perry and their militia soon arrive on the scene, still hell-bent on bringing Henry to justice.

As in the game, Joel shoots several members of the revolutionary group as they descend on Ellie, Henry and Sam. This results in one truck colliding with a nearby building and the subsequent fuel leak setting the scene ablaze.

As the group acknowledges the flaming mess, Kathleen addresses Henry and asks him to show himself.

Much like with Henry’s comment earlier, Kathleen proceeds to deliver a speech that foreshadows Joel’s actions further down the line: “I know why you did what you did,” Kathleen calls out to Henry. “But did you ever stop to think maybe he was supposed to die?”

“Kids die, Henry. They die all the time. You think the whole world revolves around [Sam]. That he’s worth everything. This is what happens when you fuck with fate.”

As Henry attempts to give himself up, giving Sam and Ellie a chance to make a run for it, things take a turn for the worse with the arrival of something even more sinister than Kathleen and her men: the infected.

The infected have generally been a rather unseen threat in the show so far, though we have been aware of their presence. We saw how the Clickers could sense their prey in the Boston museum and we saw how they could swarm a building when alerted to a person’s presence at the end of episode two. However, we had yet to see a proper confrontation between a group of survivors and a group of infected.

Episode five changes this in a truly terrifying moment. When a truck breaks through the suburbs’ ground, a swarm of infected bursts out and begins to overwhelm the survivors already engaged in conflict with each other. By swarm, I really do mean swarm. This moment reminded me of spiders erupting from a nest a la Uncharted 3, or those beetles that get under your skin in The Mummy films.

It also introduces viewers to The Last of Us’ Bloater enemy. In-game, this enemy makes its debut in Lincoln, however the show decided to forgo this reveal at the same point in favour of retelling of Bill and Frank’s story in episode three.

The Bloater’s reveal at this point in the show, however, was brilliantly done. As faster moving infected overwhelm the revolutionaries, the Bloater’s imposing form slowly emerges from the ground, before it begins to slam people into the ground in one simple motion. It then charges down Perry and rips his head clean from his body. It was quite the end for the steadfast soldier, who urged Kathleen to run as he did his utmost to shoot down the much harder to kill Bloater.

While all of this is going on, Joel is doing what he can to protect Ellie from both the Kansas City group and the infected with the sniper rifle.

Ellie, in turn, has fled the chaos and sought refuge in a now-abandoned truck. However, she too comes under attack from a young infected child that crawls around the back of the car in a jarringly disconnected way. It is like something from The Ring or The Grudge.

As Ellie escapes from this infected by shutting it in the car, she sees Henry and Sam being attacked by even more infected (and loads of them, adding to the urgency of this scene). Ellie seeks to save her friends, and under Joel’s covering fire runs to the brothers and stabs those attacking them.

The three begin to flee, only to be stopped by Kathleen – though in a small twist the infected child that so nearly overcame Ellie in the car actually saves her life here, springing onto Kathleen and tearing into her body as Ellie, Sam and Henry watch on. Joel then finally rejoins his group, and the reunited four flee into the woods as the battle between the revolutionaries and the infected rages on.

After the hair-raising scenes of the suburbs, things now take a quietly devastating turn. The four have found refuge away from Kansas City and its hunters, but despite being free from these horrors there are still more to come.

As the two children are spending time together in a separate room to Joel and Henry, Sam asks Ellie if she is ever scared. As in the game, Ellie reveals she is scared of scorpions and ending up alone. In the show, Sam then reveals to Ellie that he has been bitten and is infected. This is different from the game, where Sam expresses his fears to Ellie but does not reveal his bite.

In the show, Ellie comforts Sam and shows him her bite marks, revealing that she is immune. She then tries to save him by rubbing her blood over his wound, before saying she will stay awake with him.

Unfortunately, despite her efforts, Sam turns, and the following morning proceeds to attack Ellie just as he does in the game. As the two children tumble out of their room, Joel tries to help Ellie, but Henry shoots the floor in front of him. Henry then turns the gun on his little brother and shoots him in the head, killing him.

As blood flows from Sam’s now lifeless body, tears silently fall down Ellie’s face as Joel tries to check she is ok. A shocked Henry, realising he has just killed the one person he made it his mission to protect, then shoots himself in the head as Ellie cries out. This moment is as emotionally overwhelming in the show as it is in the game.

Unlike in the game, we see Ellie and Joel in the moments soon after this incredibly traumatic incident. Joel is shown burying the brothers, as Ellie leaves an apology note on Sam’s grave. She then heads west, and calls for Joel to follow her.

It is truly heartbreaking, and for the fourth time this series I ended the episode in floods of tears. There were moments in episode five where both viewers and the characters themselves were given the chance to feel hope. Sadly, however, these brief moments of hope further emphasise the devastation – and desperation – of The Last of Us’ world.

As always, a few more honourable mentions from this episode.

First off, I loved this cinematography parallel of Sam’s face paint and the reflection as Henry looks out at Kansas City:

Henry painted a hero’s mask on Sam to give him confidence. Image HBO.

Secondly, when Henry makes an offhand comment about Joel being Ellie’s father, I appreciated how swiftly both parties rebutted his assumption. However, despite Joel not being Ellie’s father, Henry tells Joel he knows he was once someone’s.

“You might not be her father, but you were someones. I could tell.”

Thirdly, props to the show’s prosthetic team. The infected are brilliantly brought to life on the screen thanks to what I am sure is a lot of hard work behind the scenes.

Holy sh*t! Image HBO.

Last but not least, still no Ellie on a pallet. I was sure we would see Joel and Ellie in water at some point during this episode given the Pittsburgh river scene. However, it’s still all dry on that front.

But as I said last week, perhaps next week… See you then!
