For the past two years, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series has largely been confined to notebooks. The chips delivered impressive battery life and surprisingly competitive performance, but they never got the chance to challenge compact desktop machines like Apple’s Mac mini or even the more powerful Mac Studio. The Ascent QN10 changes that.

Packing the 18-core Snapdragon X2 Elite processor alongside Qualcomm’s integrated Adreno GPU, the tiny desktop also becomes the world’s first mini PC to offer 80 TOPS of AI performance through its dedicated Hexagon NPU. So, ASUS is introducing a new form factor for Qualcomm’s most powerful PC silicon.

The desktop debut Snapdragon needed

The most interesting thing about the Ascent QN10 is the fact that Qualcomm’s flagship PC chip has finally made its way into a desktop. Until now, comparing Snapdragon-powered systems to Apple’s Mac mini has always felt slightly unfair. One sat inside a laptop chassis with battery constraints, while the other was a dedicated desktop built for sustained performance. The QN10 brings Qualcomm into that conversation.

ASUS says the system combines the X2 Elite’s 18-core CPU with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory running at 9600MHz, promising a balance of performance and efficiency while maintaining cool, quiet operation. That’s the same pitch Apple has successfully used for years with the Mac mini: serious performance without the noise and heat of traditional desktop PCs. Whether the QN10 can truly compete with Apple’s compact desktops remains to be seen, but for the first time, Qualcomm finally has the hardware platform to make that comparison meaningful.

The chip leaves the nest

Of course, ASUS and Qualcomm are leaning heavily into AI. At Microsoft Build, the companies demonstrated the QN10 running developer tools such as Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot while processing AI-assisted workflows locally. Another demonstration showed the machine running private large language models using LLMWare and AnythingLLM without relying on cloud servers.

That’s where the 80 TOPS NPU comes into play. Instead of sending data to external servers, developers can run AI workloads directly on the machine, which offers advantages in privacy, security, and responsiveness. The QN10 also supports Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC experiences, making it one of the first desktop-focused systems built around Microsoft’s growing AI ecosystem.

Still, the biggest takeaway from ASUS’ announcement is that the Snapdragon X2 Elite has finally escaped the laptop category. And if Qualcomm wants Windows on Arm to be taken seriously as a long-term alternative to Apple’s silicon strategy, a compact desktop like the Ascent QN10 is exactly the kind of product it needed to build.

The eyes of the world may be on the MacBook when it comes to Apple computers, but the firm’s lineup of Mac Minis is well worth considering too – given they offer the same performance and the same software for far less money. In fact, these machines can even outgun Apple’s (still on sale) Mac Pro from just a few years back, making them an incredible value. Today, for instance, you can pick up the M2 Mac Mini for just £585, a historic low price and less than half what you’d pay for a similarly-equipped MacBook Air.

The headline feature here is that new Apple Silicon M2 processor, which features eight CPU cores and 10 GPU cores, making it a powerful chip for video editing, web browsing and other creative endeavours. The M2 may only be more of an incremental upgrade on the older M1, but that chip was such a relevalation in terms of its performance that you’ll be hard pressed to find a more powerful computer for the asking price.

For such a small computer, this connectivity, both in terms of physical ports and wireless, is exemplary. There’s everything from a pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports to HDMI out and a pair of full-size USB-A, with gigabit ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E for networking. This allows you to take full advantage of fibre broadband, and with those Thunderbolt ports you can even add in up to 10-gig ethernet via an adapter if you need truly rapid access to storage or other machines on your local network.

The inclusion of 8GB of RAM is certainly enough for typical workloads, and while we’d recommend 16GB for Windows computers, the efficiency of Apple’s M2 processor and the macOS operating system mean that only really 8K video editing is likely to be a step too far for this configuration – not something that the vast majority of people considering a cut-price Mac will really need to do. This spec M2 Mac Mini also comes with a 256GB SSD, which is sufficient for your programs but we’d recommend getting a fast portable SSD or other external or network-attached storage if you’ll be doing video editing or storing large media libraries.

For £585, it’s hard to ignore the excellent value for money on offer with this Amazon deal on an M2-powered Mac Mini. If you were thinking of investing in an iMac, you’d be better off grabbing this newer Mac Mini and spending the extra on a quality monitor, or if you want to get into the macOS ecosystem with a more affordable choice, then this deal is for you.

The battle for compact high-performance desktops is heating up, and Nvidia appears ready to enter territory long dominated by Apple’s Mac Studio. At Computex 2026, MSI unveiled a new AI-focused mini PC called the MSI EdgeMesa N AI, powered by Nvidia’s brand-new RTX Spark platform.

The launch signals Nvidia’s growing ambition to push AI computing beyond traditional gaming desktops and into compact creator and workstation machines. More importantly, it also shows PC brands moving aggressively toward Apple’s increasingly successful formula of powerful desktop performance inside small, minimalist systems.

A tiny AI workstation built around Nvidia’s new RTX Spark platform

MSI’s EdgeMesa N AI is one of the first mini PCs announced using Nvidia’s new RTX Spark chip architecture. The system is designed specifically for AI workloads, local generative AI applications, creative software acceleration, and edge computing tasks.

While MSI has not fully disclosed every hardware detail yet, the company confirmed the mini PC combines Nvidia RTX Spark graphics with Intel-based processing hardware inside a compact chassis aimed at creators, developers, and AI-focused users.

The system is being positioned less like a traditional gaming PC and more like a local AI workstation capable of handling generative AI models, accelerated creative tasks, and productivity workloads directly on-device. That positioning immediately invites comparisons to Apple’s Mac Studio, which has become increasingly popular among creators, video editors, and developers looking for desktop-class performance in smaller form factors.

MSI says the EdgeMesa N AI is designed for local AI inference, AI-assisted workflows, content creation, and advanced multitasking scenarios that traditionally required much larger desktop systems.

MSI is not alone either. Other PC manufacturers, including ASUS, are also expected to adopt Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform for their own compact AI-focused desktops. ASUS is also pushing the RTX Spark platform far beyond laptops with its new ProArt Mini PC, a compact workstation measuring just 150 × 150 × 51mm. Despite the small footprint, the system supports up to 128GB unified LPDDR5X memory, delivers up to 1 petaflop of AI performance, and uses Nvidia’s 20-core Grace CPU paired with a Blackwell RTX GPU featuring 6,144 CUDA cores.

ASUS says the mini PC can handle 90GB+ 3D scenes, 120B-parameter large language models with up to one million tokens of context, and AI-assisted creative workloads locally. It also includes 10GbE networking, PCIe Gen 5 x4 storage expansion, and a thermal solution rated for up to 140W sustained workloads.

Why this matters

For years, Apple largely dominated the premium compact workstation category with devices like the Mac Studio and Mac mini. Now, Nvidia, alongside major PC brands, appears ready to challenge that space directly. The RTX Spark platform represents Nvidia’s attempt to create a standardized AI-focused desktop ecosystem for Windows PCs, particularly as AI workloads become more important for creators, developers, researchers, and businesses.

The shift also highlights a much larger industry transition happening right now. AI acceleration is rapidly becoming just as important as traditional CPU and GPU performance in next-generation PCs.

What happens next

MSI has not yet confirmed pricing or final availability details for the EdgeMesa N AI. However, the company is expected to reveal more specifications and launch timelines later this year. ASUS is also preparing its own RTX Spark-powered ProArt Mini PC lineup, which takes the concept even further with up to 128GB unified LPDDR5X memory, Nvidia Blackwell-based graphics, 10GbE networking, PCIe Gen 5 storage support, and claimed AI performance reaching 1 petaflop in an ultra-compact chassis.

As more manufacturers adopt Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform, compact AI desktops could quickly become one of the biggest new hardware categories emerging after the generative AI boom. Instead of massive workstation towers, creators and developers may soon have access to AI-focused machines small enough to sit beside a monitor while still handling local LLMs, advanced rendering, and accelerated AI workflows.
