It’s been over 70 days since the conflict between the United States and Iran began, with fighting in the Middle East resulting in sharp increases in oil prices, damage to infrastructure, and the inability to access the internet.

Before the conflict, Iran’s government focused on controlling its citizens’ internet activity, restricting access to social media and gaming platforms. Despite adversity, members of the country’s gaming and esports community continue to defy the odds as they seek to raise awareness of its fledgling scenes, which are struggling to amplify voices globally.

The Restriction Of Infrastructure

In many countries, access to the internet via a traditional Wi-Fi connection or mobile data is the norm. For residents of Iran, however, difficulties in accessing esports platforms, game servers, and communication channels remain. Not to mention, there was a countrywide internet outage following protests in January 2026. It was restored, but remains highly censored and unstable.

According to a source who wishes to remain anonymous, Iran’s government has implemented a tiered structure providing varying levels of access. The “white SIM card” offers unlimited access, the “pro SIM card” comes with limitations and platform restrictions, and the “National Network” requires citizens to pay for limited access.

For esports players and gamers, there’s no access to international networks unless they’ve got access to a white or pro SIM card, or if they’re willing to pay the high cost of a VPN service.

“The monthly income of an average worker in Iran is less than $100,” the source told Esports Insider. “Streamers, online sellers, gaming media outlets, and gaming centers are all facing serious challenges. Everyone is now in survival mode, trying to stay hopeful while operating with the lowest possible costs.”

With sanctions preventing access to platforms ranging from YouTube to Steam, Iran’s gaming and esports media sectors are heavily impacted when producing content. Described as “small and independent, lacking stable income, and operated with limited professional teams,” any kind of investigative journalism and in-depth analysis isn’t possible.

Instead, outlets producing content have become increasingly difficult. He explained: “Coverage has become mostly superficial or based on translations. There is demand for esports content and an audience still exists, but models such as the National Network and smart disconnection systems act as a barrier between audiences and media.”

Assistance From Wider Industry

The esports industry is no stranger to uniting to support important causes, such as those affected by conflict. In 2022, tournament organizer ESL made donations to the UN Refugee Agency following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and blocked Russian teams from competing in its tournaments.

As a result of numerous international sanctions, legal risks for stakeholders, and internet restrictions, it has become difficult for the wider esports scene to provide any support to those affected. Combined with the inability to access professional gaming platforms, Iran has struggled to establish a stable infrastructure to develop talent.

“The lack of a formal and domestic esports structure is the main reason for the absence of representation at the global level,” the source said.

Defying The Odds

Despite the lack of domestic infrastructure and support from international stakeholders, members of Iran’s fledgling esports community are breaking out onto the international stage.

eFootball player Hassan Pajani has cemented his place at the top of Konami’s sports simulation title. In February, he won the Arsenal FC Club Finals to secure a place at the season-ending World Finals in July. By winning the Club Finals, Pajani will represent Arsenal FC in the console tournament, competing against representatives from Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and FC Barcelona.

Elsewhere, Kasra “Mikey” Mesbah continues to fly the flag in Dota 2. Since embarking on a playing career in 2019, he’s competed at several Tier 1 tournaments, notably achieving a third-place finish at DreamLeague Season 19 while representing Shopify Rebellion.

It’s not just players who are looking outside of Iran and the Middle East to further their esports careers. The source told ESI: “At present, emigration has become a priority across many sectors, and there is a noticeable trend of migration among streamers and even journalists.”

Earlier this year, Counter-Strike team OxinGame moved to an Arab country to compete on the international stage under the flag of another country rather than its native nation. With players moving away to seek opportunities, Iran’s esports industry is at risk of falling by the wayside.

The Next Steps For Iran’s Esports Scene

As conflict continues to engulf Iran, the country’s gaming and esports ecosystem hopes that the small signs of growth can blossom into a sector with greater global presence.

In the meantime, the country’s industry is stagnating to the point that recovery may not be possible.

“The situation for esports in Iran is not good at all. We were previously stagnating, and now we are actually moving backward,” the source admitted.

Esports in some Middle Eastern countries is experiencing significant growth, thanks to heavy government investment, demonstrating the potential of professional gaming in the region. As the conflict in Iran continues, it remains to be seen if the country’s ecosystem is capable of recovering and reaching a level where Iranian esports holds a presence alongside other countries in the region.

Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 Ranked Mode confirmed, Gun Fight to hit Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer https://gaming.vmondeika.com/call-of-duty-warzone-2-0-ranked-mode-confirmed-gun-fight-to-hit-modern-warfare-2-multiplayer/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/call-of-duty-warzone-2-0-ranked-mode-confirmed-gun-fight-to-hit-modern-warfare-2-multiplayer/#respond Wed, 10 Jun 2026 21:18:44 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/call-of-duty-warzone-2-0-ranked-mode-confirmed-gun-fight-to-hit-modern-warfare-2-multiplayer/

With the launch of Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 and Modern Warfare 2 Season 2 today, Activision has teased what’s coming next in both a mid-season update and in the next season.

First off, Season 2 Reloaded adds a brand new core 6v6 multiplayer map for Modern Warfare 2. We know nothing about it, but we do have the image below to whet our appetites:

The addition of a brand new 6v6 map to Modern Warfare 2 will be welcomed by fans who feel the game has suffered from a lack of content in comparison to Call of Duty’s extraction mode DMZ and battle royale Warzone 2.0. Indeed, Modern Warfare 2 players reacted negatively when Activision revealed Season 2 includes two “new” maps: Dome and Valderas Museum. Dome is a remake of Dome from Infinity Ward’s 2011 game Modern Warfare 3, and Valderas Museum was playable in the MW2 beta before failing to make the launch for some reason.

Also coming with Season 2 Reloaded is a new raid episode and new unannounced multiplayer modes.

Looking even further ahead, we have our first tease of what’s in store for Season 3 and beyond. The much-loved, small-scale Gun Fight mode from 2019’s Modern Warfare returns to multiplayer with new maps each season, Activision said. Also coming to Warzone is the popular Plunder mode. And perhaps of greatest interest is confirmation of Warzone Ranked for the first time.

OpenAI adds Lockdown Mode to ChatGPT to block data theft from prompt injection attacks https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-adds-lockdown-mode-to-chatgpt-to-block-data-theft-from-prompt-injection-attacks/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-adds-lockdown-mode-to-chatgpt-to-block-data-theft-from-prompt-injection-attacks/#respond Sun, 07 Jun 2026 20:00:32 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-adds-lockdown-mode-to-chatgpt-to-block-data-theft-from-prompt-injection-attacks/ [ad_1]

TL;DR

ChatGPT’s new Lockdown Mode disables live browsing, agent mode, and deep research to block data exfiltration via prompt injection. Available on all plans.

OpenAI has begun rolling out Lockdown Mode to ChatGPT, a new security setting designed to block attackers from stealing data through prompt injection attacks. The feature disables live web browsing, agent mode, deep research, image retrieval, Canvas networking, and file downloads. It is available to logged-in users across Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and self-serve ChatGPT Business plans.

Prompt injection remains what OpenAI calls a “frontier” problem affecting all large language models. The attack works by hiding malicious instructions in content the model processes, such as a webpage or uploaded file. If the model follows those instructions, it can be tricked into sending sensitive data to an attacker-controlled server.

Lockdown Mode does not stop injections from happening. A malicious payload embedded in a cached webpage or uploaded PDF can still influence the model’s behaviour. What it does is shut down the outbound pathways an attacker would use to exfiltrate the data. No live browsing means no network requests to external servers. No image retrieval means no pixel-based data channels.

Lockdown Mode is designed to substantially reduce the risk of prompt injection-based data exfiltration, but it does not guarantee that data exfiltration cannot happen,” OpenAI said. “Risk may remain through enabled Apps, unforeseen combinations of capabilities, or newly discovered techniques.

The trade-off is significant. With Lockdown Mode on, ChatGPT loses most of what makes its agent and research features useful. Live browsing drops to cached content only. Agent mode is gone entirely. Deep research is disabled. It is, as OpenAI acknowledges, “not intended for everyone.

The feature arrives as prompt injection attacks on AI agents have become a growing concern. Security researchers have demonstrated hijacks against agents from Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft via their GitHub Actions integrations. All three paid bug bounties but published no public advisories. The underlying weakness is fundamental: LLMs cannot reliably separate data from instructions.

Lockdown Mode and Developer Mode cannot be used simultaneously. Turning one on disables the other. OpenAI also launched a separate session management feature that lets users review active ChatGPT sessions and log out of individual devices if they spot unauthorised activity.

The feature is a pragmatic concession. OpenAI is not claiming to have solved prompt injection. It is accepting that the problem persists and offering users a way to reduce their exposure by giving up functionality. For anyone handling sensitive data in ChatGPT, that trade-off is worth making. For everyone else, the expanding agent ecosystem and its growing attack surface mean the risk is only increasing.

See Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ extraction mode in action https://gaming.vmondeika.com/see-modern-warfare-4s-dmz-extraction-mode-in-action/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/see-modern-warfare-4s-dmz-extraction-mode-in-action/#respond Sun, 07 Jun 2026 19:13:22 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/see-modern-warfare-4s-dmz-extraction-mode-in-action/

Xbox closed out their main showcase with a look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and its DMZ extraction mode, set to launch as part of the full game bundle on 23rd October 2026.

Modern Warfare 4 will see war reignite in the Korean peninsula, as North invades South, no doubt dragging America and maybe even China into the war. Certainly Captain Price has something to say about it with Task Force 141, but it’s not as clear cut as all that.

Traditionally the single player campaign in the game will have the arena multiplayer alongside, and Warzone will remain a free-to-play game alongside. However, DMZ is joining the premium package.

This will let you deploy solo or in a squad to a conflict zone, tasked with recovering military technology in the wake of the war. With changing weather, dynamic objectives and hostile forces you’ll have to get in, get the tech and get back out.

DMZ could be a great take on the extraction shooter, and will certainly bring it to the broadest audience yet, even as Arc Raiders has proven to be a major hit last year, and Marathon proved to be more of a cult hit so far.

OpenAI unveils Lockdown Mode to protect sensitive data from prompt injection attacks https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-unveils-lockdown-mode-to-protect-sensitive-data-from-prompt-injection-attacks/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-unveils-lockdown-mode-to-protect-sensitive-data-from-prompt-injection-attacks/#respond Sun, 07 Jun 2026 05:57:31 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-unveils-lockdown-mode-to-protect-sensitive-data-from-prompt-injection-attacks/ [ad_1]

OpenAI announced a new feature that it says will provide additional protection from prompt injection attacks, where malicious chatbot instructions are hidden in webpages and other content sources.

Among other things, Lockdown Mode will disable live web browsing (so you can only access cached content), the retrieval and display of images from the web (you can still generate images), deep research, and agent mode.

The company says that even with Lockdown Mode turned on, ChatGPT could still be vulnerable to prompt injections — which could, for example, “appear in cached web content or in an uploaded file, and could still affect the behavior or accuracy of a response.”

But the goal is to reduce the likelihood that sensitive data gets shared in the process.

“Lockdown Mode is not intended for everyone,” OpenAI says. “It is designed for people and organizations that handle sensitive data and want stricter protection from data exfiltration risks related to prompt injection.”

The company says it’s currently rolling Lockdown Mode out to self-serve ChatGPT Business accounts, as well as eligible personal accounts.

Gemini could soon offer a troubleshooting mode and save you a trip to help manuals https://gaming.vmondeika.com/gemini-could-soon-offer-a-troubleshooting-mode-and-save-you-a-trip-to-help-manuals/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/gemini-could-soon-offer-a-troubleshooting-mode-and-save-you-a-trip-to-help-manuals/#respond Sat, 06 Jun 2026 01:49:48 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/gemini-could-soon-offer-a-troubleshooting-mode-and-save-you-a-trip-to-help-manuals/ [ad_1]

Google may have just accidentally shown everyone where Gemini is headed next. According to TestingCatalog, a new Troubleshooting mode has quietly appeared inside the Gemini model picker menu for some users.

It sits alongside existing options like Gemini 3.5 Flash and 3.1 Pro, which are the standard AI models you already switch between in the app.

GOOGLE 🔥: A new Troubleshooting mode has been spotted on Gemini.

In this mode, Gemini will explain troubleshooting process via text responses and interactive widgets. Even though it is working and available, it still looks like an unintended release and might get reverted… https://t.co/FWQLelYXju pic.twitter.com/Y73PJb7y1e

🚨 AI News | TestingCatalog (@testingcatalog) June 4, 2026

What does the Troubleshooting mode in Gemini actually do?

Rather than giving you a wall of text to read, the Troubleshooting mode guides you through a problem step by step using a mix of text responses and interactive widgets.

For example, if you tell Gemini your car will not start, it might identify common causes like a dead battery and then present you with symptom options to tap, such as “clicks or silent,” to help narrow down the issue faster. It is a more structured, guided experience than asking Gemini a question in regular chat mode.

How is this different from just asking Gemini normally?

That is a fair question, and the answer comes down to how the mode is tuned under the hood. Redditors who got early access suggest it runs on a lower temperature setting, which means it sticks closely to the problem at hand and skips the conversational filler.

Its responses are reportedly focused on diagnosis and practical fixes rather than general information. Google has not officially announced the feature, and it remains unclear whether this is a planned rollout or an internal test.

For now, the Troubleshoot feature appears to be an unintended release, meaning Google likely flipped it on by mistake, and could pull it back at any time. More details are expected in the coming weeks.

If you find Gemini’s new Troubleshooting mode exciting, there is a lot more happening with the assistant right now. Google just unveiled Gemini Spark, a 24/7 AI agent that handles your tasks in the background. On the flip side, free users may soon face stricter weekly usage caps.

Reid Hoffman is leaving Microsoft’s board to go ‘founder mode’ with startup Manus https://gaming.vmondeika.com/reid-hoffman-is-leaving-microsofts-board-to-go-founder-mode-with-startup-manus/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/reid-hoffman-is-leaving-microsofts-board-to-go-founder-mode-with-startup-manus/#respond Fri, 05 Jun 2026 23:32:48 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/reid-hoffman-is-leaving-microsofts-board-to-go-founder-mode-with-startup-manus/ [ad_1]

After a very profitable decade on Microsoft’s board, Reid Hoffman is stepping down, the company announced Thursday. Hoffman joined the board after Microsoft bought his company LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in 2016.

Hoffman was on Microsoft’s board when it invested its first $1 billion into OpenAI in 2019. Hoffman was one of OpenAI’s original investors and served on the model maker’s board until he stepped down in 2023, citing too many potential conflicts of interest to continue. He was also on Microsoft’s board when the tech giant entered into one of those non-acquisition, acqui-hire deals for $650 million with his AI startup Inflection AI. Microsoft hired Inflection co-founder Mustafa Suleyman through that deal.

Hoffman said on a recent episode of his “Possible” podcast, while talking with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, that he’s ready to go “founder mode” with his latest AI startup, Manus. Manus is a drug discovery company that raised over $50 million through a couple of seed rounds last year. Hoffman is an investor, as is General Catalyst.

Hoffman is cited as a co-founder of Manus and chairman of the board, not the CEO, though. That job belongs to Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, a physician, biologist, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the 2011 book “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.”

Still, Hoffman said he’s excited to give Manus more attention.

“One of the things I realized over the last month was that, we’re seeing such progress with Manus. I need to get back to founder mode,” he said. He believes the startup is making progress on “Move 37” AI, meaning AI that supersedes human creativity in chemistry, especially to combat various cancers, he added.

While the latest instalment in the Mario Kart series – Mario Kart World – has arrived without a 200cc mode, it has fortunately still got a Mirror Mode hidden away for you to unlock. That said, figuring out the exact prerequisites for Mirror Mode becoming available has been a challenge in and of itself.

Fortunately, after some testing, it turns out that Mirror Mode isn’t too much of a grind to unlock once you know exactly what you need to do. On top of that, Mirror Mode isn’t exclusive to racing; you can even explore the free-roam map in Mirror Mode too! Without further ado, here’s exactly how to unlock Mirror Mode in Mario Kart World.

How to unlock Mirror Mode in Mario Kart World

To unlock Mirror Mode in Mario Kart World, you want to complete the following list of tasks:

  • Complete all Grand Prix (150cc)
  • Complete all Knockout Tours (150cc)
  • Find at least 10 Peach Medallions
  • Find at least 10 Hidden Question (?) Panels
  • Complete at least 10 P Switch mission

Once you have completed the above checklist, go ahead and complete the Special Cup (Grand Prix) once more.

After the Grand Prix, the credits will roll and then be followed by a brief cutscene. You will then get the ‘You have unlocked Mirror Mode’ pop-up!
