Loot Boxes - What will be their future?
© Blizzard Entertainment

If you thought the days of holding your breath while a glowing box rattled on your screen were gone, Blizzard has a surprise for your dopamine receptors. To celebrate Overwatch‘s latest anniversary, the developers are leaning into nostalgia by bringing back limited-time loot boxes.

It is a bold move considering the industry largely shifted away from them years ago, but for this event, the “Old Overwatch” vibes are the main attraction.

Blizzard confirmed the news following a wave of community requests for more ways to earn legacy content. They are adding over 20 new skins to the pool, including some high-effort Mythics that actually look worth the grind.

The Gambling Gremlin Returns

The mechanics are exactly how you remember them. You earn boxes by leveling up or completing specific event challenges. If you don’t feel like playing thirty matches of Mystery Heroes, you can still buy them directly. Blizzard was quick to clarify that these boxes only contain cosmetic items. You won’t find any competitive advantages inside, just the usual mix of voice lines, sprays, and that one legendary skin for a hero you never play.

The community reaction has been a strange mix of excitement and “oh no, not again.” There is a certain charm to the random drop that the current battle pass system lacks. Opening a box and seeing that gold disc fly into the air provides a rush that simply clicking “tier 45” on a progress bar cannot match.

A Wardrobe Refresh

The new skins are the real draw here. We are looking at a “Cyber-Knight” Reinhardt that looks like he walked off the set of a high-budget sci-fi flick. Tracer is also getting a “Flashback” skin that references her early concept art.

Beyond the fresh threads, Blizzard is bringing back every seasonal brawl from the archives. Lucioball, Junkenstein’s Revenge, and Mei’s Snowball Offensive will all be on a daily rotation. It is basically a greatest-hits album for the game’s ten-year history.

Why the Change of Heart?

This move feels like a tactical olive branch. Overwatch 2 has faced its fair share of criticism regarding its monetization. By bringing back the loot box — even temporarily — Blizzard is acknowledging that the “old way” had a sense of rewarded progression that fans clearly miss. It might be a one-time thing, or it could be a test to see if a hybrid system works better for the game’s long-term health.

Regardless of the motive, the next three weeks will be a frenzy of players trying to complete their collections. Just try not to get too tilted when your “Guaranteed Legendary” turns out to be a duplicate currency drop.

Dust off your lucky charms and start grinding. Those boxes aren’t going to open themselves, and that Reinhardt skin isn’t getting any cheaper.

Former Retro Studios engineer “let down” by Metroid Prime remaster’s lack of credit for original team https://gaming.vmondeika.com/former-retro-studios-engineer-let-down-by-metroid-prime-remasters-lack-of-credit-for-original-team/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/former-retro-studios-engineer-let-down-by-metroid-prime-remasters-lack-of-credit-for-original-team/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 01:49:25 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/former-retro-studios-engineer-let-down-by-metroid-prime-remasters-lack-of-credit-for-original-team/

A Metroid Prime designer has voiced disappointment that the game’s original team were not individually credited in the GameCube classic’s recently-released remaster.

Former Retro Studios engineer Zoid Kirsch, who was also unhappy about changes to the door designs, said on Twitter he was “let down” by the lack of individual credits.

“While many studios did amazing work on the remaster, I’m let down Metroid Prime’s Remaster does not include the full original game credits,” he said.

“I worked with so many amazing people on the game and everyone’s name should be included in the remaster, not just a single card like this.”

Along with the tweet is an image of the credits, which simply states: “Based on the work of Metroid Prime (original Nintendo GameCube and Wii versions) development staff”.

Following his previous comment on the doors, he did note that “the remaster is amazingly well done”.

He added: “The improvements to Samus and the boss models are awesome. I just noticed this particular change [to the doors] that stood out from the original. It’s still a wonderful remaster and should be played and enjoyed.”

Metroid Prime Remastered was announced at last week’s Nintendo Direct and has shot to the top of the eShop charts.

This isn’t the first game to have an issue with lack of credits, however.

Earlier this year, an ex-Sega developer highlighted the lack of credits for translators in the recent Persona 3 and 4 releases.

Before that, some developers were left out of The Callisto Protocol credits and accused the studio of “playing favourites”.
