Another Nintendo Direct, another disappointment. I didn’t even bother watching the livestream, and I’m glad I didn’t: just a bunch of remakes, DLC, and a bunch of other crap we’ve already seen before. No Super Smash Bros. 6.

We already knew this, of course. Masahiro Sakurai has essentially confirmed another Smash is coming, but given no details. He only works on one game at a time and has just finished his passion project, Kirby Air Riders. This means he only started working on the long-awaited fighter this year.

Of course, there’s a reason the Smash esports community is anxiously waiting. It needs this game.

Super Smash Bros. Esports Needs a New Game

I recently shared an interview with former Call of Duty Multiplayer Creative Director Greg Reisdorf that discussed the downfall of Call of Duty esports. What has made this esports scene fail to grab attention despite the games being so popular?

Reisdorf believes it’s due to Call of Duty’s annual releases, which dilute the game’s competitive intensity and integrity. When esports pros have to relearn the game time and time again, the buildup is gone. The inconsistency undermines any sense of prestige or elitism. It feels a bit chaotic.

“It always came up in development: why are we doing this over and over again? It’s always a topic of conversation with the players and within the devs because you are redoing it over and over again,” he expressed at the time.

So, you may be thinking: Why do you want Smash 6?

Well, Smash is built different. Unlike other games, the Smash scene has remained quite grassroots, without the massive production or franchising that other scenes have. It’s less linear. Nobody is forced to move forward, forgetting older games along the way.

At GENESIS X3, Ultimate was featured and had the largest bracket. But Melee, a game from 20ish years ago, was featured right along with it. Brawl and Smash 64 also had tournaments, albeit smaller. But that didn’t stop passionate competitors from flying out for them.

“I just f***ing love playing this game,” said top Brawl pro Christina “Chia” Korsak to Esports Insider. “It’s weird how it can still trap my attention, even more than the current titles. More than every other game. I’ll get sucked into a Zelda game for, like, three hours these days. But if you sit me in front of a Brawl bracket, I’m hooked forever.”

While the games may feel alike to casual players, there are so many differences that the games are practically nothing alike to the pros. I remember playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with Josh Brody. He’s considered one of the best N64 players out there. I beat him at Ultimate. He has spent so much time grinding Smash 64 that he’s used to that controller, those moves, those frame rates…

Every Smash game has its own distinct scene with their own personalities, rivalries, and vibes. It’s always been entertaining to see the constant drama between the Ultimate and Melee scenes. The games and their players couldn’t be more different. Melee pros are often calling out Ultimate for being less technical, while Ultimate fans often call Melee repetitive to watch.

Smash 6 Will Bring the Hype and New Fans

When Smash 6 comes out, everyone will try it. Chia will undoubtedly take a break from Brawl to play it. Melee God Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma will grind it on Twitch. Many Ultimate players will switch over permanently. In fact, Smash 6 may take over Ultimate’s spot depending on how the gameplay is.

But the older games will live on. And Smash 6 will fuel them more. There will be more attention on Smash when the new game comes out, bringing in new fans and players. And that means more people checking out Melee, Brawl, and all the other games.

While Ultimate has often been given top billing, the game’s popularity has allowed other tournaments to exist. Now that Ultimate hype is dying out, Smash 6 will become the game that provides funding, attention, and fans for Smash, providing the other scenes with tourneys to compete in. The more Smash 6-focused events that pop up, the better, since they will also likely have brackets for Melee and other titles.

Let’s just hope there are no characters like Steve. We need fun battles again. We need fun rivalries again. We need consistent top players to follow again. Smash 6 is the Ultimate scene’s chance to feel hype, intense, and passionate like Melee. And that will only make the other scenes stronger.

Wa-hoo! The sequel to the Super Mario Bros Movie gets a name, thanks to NBCUniversal prematurely pressing let’s a-go https://gaming.vmondeika.com/wa-hoo-the-sequel-to-the-super-mario-bros-movie-gets-a-name-thanks-to-nbcuniversal-prematurely-pressing-lets-a-go/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/wa-hoo-the-sequel-to-the-super-mario-bros-movie-gets-a-name-thanks-to-nbcuniversal-prematurely-pressing-lets-a-go/#respond Fri, 12 Jun 2026 11:40:07 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/wa-hoo-the-sequel-to-the-super-mario-bros-movie-gets-a-name-thanks-to-nbcuniversal-prematurely-pressing-lets-a-go/

The upcoming sequel to 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie looks to have accidentally had its name revealed early, thanks to NBCUniversal making a goof with a press release. The film will seemingly be going by Super Mario World, not to be confused with the classic 90s SNES game.

We first learned that this sequel was coming in March last year, as Nintendo, Universal and co unsurprisingly decided to double down on the big hit. This year’s Minecraft Movie has only further marked that call out as a no-brainer, as game adaptations continue to make huge bank at the box office.

Now, as spotted by Wario64, NBCUniversal has put out a press release citing Super Mario World among a list of upcoming films from Universal Pictures and Illumination that will eventually be released on its Peacock streaming service.

The reference to Mario was quickly scrubbed, pointing to it having been an error of some kind to chuck it in alongside the likes of Shrek, Minions, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale – all films that cater to the exact same audience (ok, maybe not). That’d be Shrek 5 and Minions 3, by the way, potentially suggesting Super Mario World might not be this sequel’s final title, if it turns out the company only meant the Mario movie IP as a whole.

That said, as folks have pointed out, Super Mario World could make perfect sense as the title if the SNES game and the events of the first Mario movie’s post-credits scene offer clues here.

Warning: Spoilers for The Super Mario Movie lie ahead.

That post-credits scene offered a quick look at a polka-dotted egg starting to hatch – likely teasing a Yoshi debut. Super Mario World on the SNES marked Yoshi’s game debut in the long-running series that he’s gone on to become a staple of as we’ve hopped, leaped, and jumped from the 90s to 2025.

Plus, it’d also fit nicely with the latest edition of Mario Kart set to drop with the Switch 2 this summer being dubbed Mario Kart World. Accidental corporate synergy maybe, but hey.

Wait! Will this next Mario movie have cinema-goers demanding that prices be dropped? Given the kind of theatre shenanigans the Minecraft Movie’s spawned, who knows.

While you wait to see if Super Mario World is confirmed as the sequel’s name, make sure to check out our review of the first film.

OpenAI is still working on that ‘super app’ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-is-still-working-on-that-super-app/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-is-still-working-on-that-super-app/#respond Sun, 07 Jun 2026 19:36:31 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/openai-is-still-working-on-that-super-app/ [ad_1]

OpenAI plans to roll out a revamped version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks — one that will serve as a “super app” with coding tools and AI agents, according to the Financial Times.

The company’s goal is reportedly to become more competitive with Anthropic, particularly among business customers, and to get closer to profitability before an IPO. That means turning ChatGPT into a gateway leading free users to products they might actually pay for, such as coding product Codex. In fact, the FT quotes one senior OpenAI employee as declaring, “Chat is dead.”

Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI’s core product and platform, said the company is working towards a product “where you have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you … across everything in your life, be it personally or at work.”

If this sounds familiar, it’s because there have been reports about OpenAI’s super app ambitions since last year.

In March, The Wall Street Journal reported that these plans represent a major strategy shift for the company after launching a variety of standalone products in 2025; OpenAI executives now say they’re abandoning “side quests” like video generator Sora.

ChatGPT is eyeing a major “super app” overhaul that wants to do real work for you https://gaming.vmondeika.com/chatgpt-is-eyeing-a-major-super-app-overhaul-that-wants-to-do-real-work-for-you/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/chatgpt-is-eyeing-a-major-super-app-overhaul-that-wants-to-do-real-work-for-you/#respond Sun, 07 Jun 2026 19:30:32 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/chatgpt-is-eyeing-a-major-super-app-overhaul-that-wants-to-do-real-work-for-you/ [ad_1]

OpenAI is reportedly preparing a major transformation of ChatGPT that could fundamentally change how people interact with artificial intelligence. Instead of remaining primarily a conversational chatbot, the company now wants ChatGPT to evolve into a “super app” powered by AI agents capable of managing tasks across both personal and professional life.

According to a report by the Financial Times, OpenAI executives increasingly believe the future of AI lies not in chatbots that simply answer questions, but in intelligent systems that actively complete tasks for users. The company’s long-term vision reportedly includes AI agents capable of organizing schedules, booking travel, writing software, generating content, and managing workflows across multiple services and platforms.

OpenAI executive Thibault Sottiaux reportedly described the goal as creating a “personal agent” that can help users “across everything in your life.” That vision would allow users to interact with ChatGPT through smartphones, desktops, websites, and potentially even vehicles, turning the platform into a much broader digital assistant ecosystem.

OpenAI is betting big on AI agents and enterprise growth

A major part of the strategy revolves around Codex, OpenAI’s coding-focused platform, which has reportedly grown to more than five million weekly active users. Internally, OpenAI appears increasingly convinced that coding tools and AI agents capable of taking actions on behalf of users could become far more valuable than traditional chatbot interactions.

To support that shift, the company is reportedly redesigning ChatGPT’s mobile and web interfaces to highlight coding, image generation, and integrations with third-party services. Partner applications from companies like Canva and Booking.com may also become more deeply integrated into the ChatGPT experience as OpenAI pushes toward a more connected AI ecosystem.

The changes also reflect mounting pressure inside the AI industry. Competition has intensified rapidly as rivals, including Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google, continue expanding their own AI-powered products and enterprise offerings. While ChatGPT remains one of the world’s most recognizable AI products, OpenAI is under increasing pressure to prove long-term profitability and diversify revenue streams beyond free chatbot usage.

Enterprise customers are becoming especially important to that effort. Reports suggest business-focused products already account for a significant portion of OpenAI’s revenue, and the company is reorganizing internal teams to prioritize enterprise growth over some consumer-oriented initiatives.

ChatGPT may eventually become much more than a chatbot

The broader implication is that OpenAI no longer sees ChatGPT as just a messaging interface. Instead, the company appears to be positioning it as a central operating layer for future AI-powered computing experiences.

If successful, the shift could reshape how users interact with software entirely. Rather than opening separate apps for productivity, communication, coding, travel, scheduling, and search, people may increasingly rely on a single AI assistant capable of handling multiple tasks conversationally and autonomously.

At the same time, OpenAI is also strengthening relationships with policymakers and regulators as AI becomes more politically and economically significant. Reports indicate the company plans to provide the U.S. government with early access to some AI models under a voluntary framework introduced by President Donald Trump. Discussions around potential government stakes in AI companies have also reportedly involved OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as officials explore ways to distribute AI-driven economic gains more broadly.

The overhaul of ChatGPT is reportedly expected to roll out gradually through updates to the app and website in the coming months. If OpenAI succeeds, ChatGPT may soon evolve from a chatbot people occasionally visit into a constantly present AI assistant woven into everyday life.

Yooka-Laylee dev Playtonic Games has been teasing an announcement on social media over the past couple of days, and now a listing for ‘Super Yooka-Laylee Kart’ playtest has appeared via SteamDB (thanks, Gematsu).

The listing includes art and a logo, suggesting that the studio’s recent teases (including the couplet “Collecting quills is far too slow, There may be faster ways to go…”) are indeed pointing to a racing game.

There’s no official word as yet, and therefore no confirmation on what platforms this may come to if it is Playtonic’s next project.

If you’re unfamiliar, SteamDB is a website and tool that tracks all publicly available data on Steam, including behind-the-scenes stats and uploads.

If true, Super Yooka-Laylee Kart would follow last year’s Yooka-Replaylee, which reworked the team’s first game and Kickstarter hit for modern platforms. An update in April brought 60fps performance to the Switch 2 version.

Prior to that, the team released a well-received side-scrolling sequel, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, in 2019.

Reckon this is legit? Are you in the market for a Yooka-Laylee kart racer? Dreaming of a Diddy Kong Racing spiritual successor, perhaps? Let us know below.

New Super Mario Bros. Wonder amiibo are up for preorder at Amazon, and you won’t believe how incredible they look https://gaming.vmondeika.com/new-super-mario-bros-wonder-amiibo-are-up-for-preorder-at-amazon-and-you-wont-believe-how-incredible-they-look/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/new-super-mario-bros-wonder-amiibo-are-up-for-preorder-at-amazon-and-you-wont-believe-how-incredible-they-look/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 08:49:17 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/new-super-mario-bros-wonder-amiibo-are-up-for-preorder-at-amazon-and-you-wont-believe-how-incredible-they-look/

Super Mario Bros. Wonder getting the Switch 2 Edition + expansion treatment in March feels like Nintendo making the correct call, and I couldn’t think of a better game to be getting that bit more attention on the new system.

To mark the new-gen upgrade and the arrival of the Meetup in Bellabel Park DLC, Nintendo is also rolling out three brand-new amiibo tied to the game. Each one costs $24.99 and they all launch on March 26, the same day the new content goes live. Pre-orders are already open.

The lineup includes Elephant Mario, Captain Toad with a Talking Flower, and Poplin with Prince Florian. Elephant Mario is exactly as charming as it sounds, squeezing his oversized elephant form halfway out of a pipe. The Poplin amiibo features the bright orange character clutching a watering can, with Prince Florian perched on top of his head. Captain Toad, meanwhile, strikes a celebratory pose alongside the ever-chatty Talking Flower.

And because Nintendo cannot resist leaning into its own weirdness, there is also a standalone Talking Flower toy on the way. Yes, it actually talks to you. Yes, it is also available to preorder right now as well for $34.99.

As for the Switch 2 version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder itself, Nintendo is charging $79.99, which is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. Thankfully, there is a workaround if the original Switch version is not already sitting on your shelf. You can currently grab the standard Switch release for $46.99 at Woot, then upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition via the eShop for $19.99 once the expansion drops.

That brings the total to $64.99 for the full Switch 2 experience, saving $15 in the process. Not bad at all, especially when the alternative is paying full Nintendo tax for the privilege.

If you’re in the UK, you can pick up the Switch 2 version for £66.99 physical, and the rest of the new amiibo at My Nintendo Store UK.

Super Mario Bros. Movie launches Easter egg-filled plumbing advert https://gaming.vmondeika.com/super-mario-bros-movie-launches-easter-egg-filled-plumbing-advert/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/super-mario-bros-movie-launches-easter-egg-filled-plumbing-advert/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 02:50:37 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/super-mario-bros-movie-launches-easter-egg-filled-plumbing-advert/

As the hype campaign for the Super Mario Bros. Movie ramps up, there’s now an advert for the brothers’ fictitious plumbing company to watch, and a tie-in website to explore.

The in-universe advert for Mario and Luigi’s plumbing buisiness popped up last night during the Super Bowl, and sees the brothers saving the day from a leaky sink.

An associated website for the business has also gone live at SMBPlumbing.com, and also includes a US phone number you can ring to hear a pre-recorded voice message from Luigi himself (Charlie Day).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Super Bowl commercial. Watch on YouTube

Dial 929-55-MARIO and you’ll hear a message saying: “Thank you for calling Super Mario Bros. Plumbing, it’s-a me Luigi!” The note goes on to state that the brothers are happy to consider all jobs no matter the size – even in a mansion. Ha!

The advert in general is full of Easter eggs for long-term Nintendo fans, not least its use of The Mario Rap from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.

Speaking of, numerous fans have suggested the voice of the homeowner here is Jeannie Elias, the original voice of Peach, AKA Princess Toadstool, from the Super Mario Bros Super Show.

A map shown in the advert also includes references to various Nintendo properties, such as Link Street, Hanfuda Ave, Punch Out and 189th Street (1889 being the year Nintendo was originally established).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie. is set for UK cinemas on 7th April, with Chris Pratt and Mario and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.
