TL;DR

FF7 Revelation took 3 years vs the usual 5+ because 95% of the team stayed from Rebirth. Square Enix’s most efficient cycle ever.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the conclusion to the remake trilogy, will launch in spring 2027. That is just three years after the second game, Rebirth. By modern AAA standards, where five years or longer is typical, that is fast.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi told Bloomberg the reason is simple: 95% of the development team stayed together from Rebirth. “The big benefit of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series is that we never had to go through that process, so the transition was extremely quick,” he said.

The industry norm is to disband teams after each release, then spend months reassembling for the next project. New people need new roles, new trust, new workflows. Hamaguchi avoided all of it by starting Revelation’s design a year before Rebirth shipped, then moving the same team straight into production.

The results show in the numbers. Remake took years of pre-production. Rebirth took four years. Revelation took three. Each game shipped faster than the last with the same people doing the work. Hamaguchi and Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida are the only two leaders at Square Enix who maintain persistent teams across projects. Both run the company’s most successful franchises.

I think it’s something that we should be mindful of as a company,” Hamaguchi said. “Because this did bring out a really huge benefit in terms of speeding up and having an efficient development timeline.

The lesson arrives at a brutal moment. Xbox is planning major layoffs in July under new CEO Asha Sharma. Microsoft and Meta have cut tens of thousands of jobs this year while redirecting spending to AI. The gaming industry lost 11% of developers in 2024 according to GDC’s annual survey, with 41% affected directly or through their teams.

Hamaguchi’s interview also revealed design decisions shaped by player feedback. Mini-game rewards in Revelation will be purely cosmetic, not tied to combat strategy as they were in Rebirth. The Highwind airship will let players fly around the entire world with no invisible walls, a feature Hamaguchi pushed through despite engineering objections. A new job system called FITS offers four unique classes per character, each with deep skill-tree progression.

Only four or five people at Square Enix knew the title “Revelation” before it was announced. Hundreds of developers learned the name at the same time as the public.

After Revelation ships, Hamaguchi said his next project will not be a remake. He is considering a AA title, a new Final Fantasy, or an original AAA franchise. He would love to keep the team together but acknowledged the tension: holding talent in two persistent teams “staggers and hinders the growth of the company.Tech companies keep cutting teams and wondering why the next thing takes so long. Hamaguchi proved what happens when you don’t.

Ever since the Overwatch League died, Overwatch esports have been a bit of a depressing talking point in the industry. The Overwatch Championship Series hasn’t hit the same. The hype has largely disappeared, although some exciting teams remain.

When I saw that the OWCS Champions Clash had such an incredible viewership jump — with 290,600 peak viewers (during the lower bracket final, weirdly enough) and 5.4 million hours watched, two times that of last year’s — I thought, “Wow, people care more about Overwatch esports than I thought.”

And some esports fans felt the same, noting the varied meta and how many heroes were played (41 out of the 51). The audience in Tokyo, Japan was also very passionate during the broadcast. But that’s just a small part of the story.

The Twitch Drops Heard Around the World: Overwatch Players May Watch Esports Now

Most esports events have drops these days, which are in-game awards fans can earn by watching the tournament for a certain amount of time on Twitch. But most of these drops are somewhat lame. I mean, it’s free stuff so people still want it. But it has often been sorta throwaway cosmetics.

But the OWCS went super hard this time around. For the Champions Clash, the Twitch Drops included skins for Kiriko, Hanzo, and Mizuki, as well as esports loot boxes, and other exclusive cosmetics. These were huge, especially for those who collect skins.

When news broke that the Champions Clash had a ton of viewers, most fans admitted it was due to the improved drops. It really made all the difference.

But that doesn’t mean nobody likes Overwatch esports.

Ever since Overwatch 2 dropped the “2,” added a bunch of heroes, and made other massive changes to the game to bring it back to the spirit of the original, the game has been exploding. After the Season 1 re-launch, Overwatch had over 165,000 concurrent players at one point.

And they have stayed, with the player count often reaching six figures. With the gameplay changes and added heroes, the meta has felt a lot healthier and more entertaining. This has improved the Overwatch playerbase.

And with a larger playerbase comes more people looking for exclusive drops. They may not necessarily care about the esports itself, but they can’t pass up a chance at having these special skins and loot boxes.

However, the drops were just the initial draw.

“I know drops are a huge reason why, but this was genuinely one of the best majors in years. Diverse comps and metas, huge upsets on the final day, more individual hero plays than I feel I’ve seen since the original season of OWL, all of the broadcast talent was enjoyable, and for me, most importantly, the fans at the arena were really into it,” said one fan.

Another added: “My friends who never really watch Overwatch esports tuned in for the drops and then were actually thoroughly entertained by the games, despite not really knowing anything about OWCS. Was super cool to see.”

So… Is Overwatch esports back? Not yet… But I think this was a good start. While people came for the drops because they care about the game, that’s a good foundation for the esports side of things. Now that there are more players, more people understand the game enough to watch esports broadcasts.

Now that they’ve checked out the action, maybe they’ll want to see more. And that’s thanks to the exciting matches and talented broadcast talent at this year’s Champions Clash.

We can’t predict if these Overwatch players will stick around. But we can confirm that drops make a huge difference. And other esports events should take note.

Minecraft getting new cherry blossom biome in this year’s big 1.20 update https://gaming.vmondeika.com/minecraft-getting-new-cherry-blossom-biome-in-this-years-big-1-20-update/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/minecraft-getting-new-cherry-blossom-biome-in-this-years-big-1-20-update/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 09:49:34 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/minecraft-getting-new-cherry-blossom-biome-in-this-years-big-1-20-update/

Minecraft developer Mojang is gearing up for this year’s big 1.20 release, and following on from last week’s revelation it’ll finally introduce the game’s long-delayed archaeology system, the studio has now confirmed it’ll also usher in a new cherry blossom biome and sniffer mob.

The sniffer, you might recall, came out top among Minecraft players during last year’s Minecraft Live mob vote, beating out two other options: the Rascal and Tuff Golem. Once 1.20 arrives, players will want to use their new archaeology tools to explore suspicious sand in search of sniffer eggs. Hatching these will eventually produce a fully grown sniffer, able to sniff out seeds long thought lost to time, but that when planted, will grow into unique blooms.

And talk of blooms brings us nicely to Minecraft 1.20’s other freshly announced addition: the aforementioned cherry blossom biome. As detailed in Mojang’s blog, the large, fluffy trees that grow here attract the likes of pigs, sheep, and bees, causing them to spawn in the area.

Minecraft’s new sniffer mob was voted as community favourite during last year’s Minecraft Live.Watch on YouTube

Additionally, the trees can be felled to create a full, pink-hued wood set that includes the new hanging sign object, and those that want to bring a splash of pink to areas outside the cherry blossoms’ natural habitat can plant cherry tree saplings elsewhere in the world.

Minecraft’s 1.20 update – which was previously confirmed to also include the likes of camels and bamboo rafts – doesn’t yet have an ETA beyond a vague “2023”, but those that want to sample its new features early can do so as soon as its relevant snapshots, betas, and previews release.

Google’s first new smart speaker in six years might finally have a release date https://gaming.vmondeika.com/googles-first-new-smart-speaker-in-six-years-might-finally-have-a-release-date/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/googles-first-new-smart-speaker-in-six-years-might-finally-have-a-release-date/#respond Tue, 02 Jun 2026 01:18:48 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/googles-first-new-smart-speaker-in-six-years-might-finally-have-a-release-date/ [ad_1]

Google has been unusually quiet about its Gemini-powered Home Speaker ever since announcing it in October 2025. I was expecting the device to make an appearance at the I/O 2026, but that didn’t happen either.

Now, a product page on Best Buy Canada just casually posted (read leaked) a release date, suggesting the wait is almost over.

What does the leak suggest?

As per the Best Buy page, the Home Speaker might be released on June 25, 2026 (via 9To5Google). The page has since been updated, and the launch date has been removed, which is the kind of thing that usually happens with real release dates rather than placeholders.

So, how do we know about the release date? Several outlets captured screenshots before the date was removed. Even though Google hasn’t confirmed the Home Speaker’s launch date yet, June 25 is just four days after spring officially ends on June 21, which adds more credibility to it.

In my opinion, the delay is intentional. Google had to finish rolling out Gemini for Home to existing hardware before introducing new devices, and that rollout has been active since October 2025, with updates arriving three to four times per month since March 2026.

What does the Google Home Speaker actually offer?

The device wraps a 360-degree fabric design around everything except the base, which houses a microphone mute switch and a ring of status lights, which glow dynamically when the speaker is listening, thinking, or responding. Some features, including brainstorming, require a Gemini subscription

You can also pair two speakers with the Google TV Streamer for a home cinema setup, and stereo pairing with existing Nest Audio speakers enables multi-room audio throughout the house.

Google’s Gemini AI assistant enables natural language conversation, along with smart home control and automation. Priced at $99.99 in the US, it will be available in four colors: Berry, Hazel, Jade, and Porcelain. Availability is confirmed for 19 countries including the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Ireland, and Japan.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons gets a new item to celebrate 25 years of the series https://gaming.vmondeika.com/animal-crossing-new-horizons-gets-a-new-item-to-celebrate-25-years-of-the-series/ https://gaming.vmondeika.com/animal-crossing-new-horizons-gets-a-new-item-to-celebrate-25-years-of-the-series/#respond Mon, 01 Jun 2026 23:27:45 +0000 https://gaming.vmondeika.com/animal-crossing-new-horizons-gets-a-new-item-to-celebrate-25-years-of-the-series/

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has received a surprise patch today to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the life sim series. The update, version 3.0.2, is available across the Switch and Switch 2 versions of the game.

The patch brings a single new addition to New Horizons – a leaf item. Everyone gets it, too, so you don’t have to do anything special to acquire it.

After installing the patch, simply head to your in-house mailbox to claim it. The mail includes a hearty message to fans who supported the series for years, featuring an appropriate Nintendo N64 stamp.

The Leaf Statue, as it’s referred to in-game, lights up when placed.

April 14, 2011 marks the release of the original, lesser-known version of Animal Crossing in Japan. The game was initially released as Animal Forest (Dobutsu no Mori) on the Nintendo N64, before later making its way to the Nintendo GameCube in December of the same year as Dobutsu no Mori+ with some extra features.

That same, original design of the package is also available for display in your game. The rest of the patch notes are entirely about various bug fixes, so not much more there. You can see the full change log on Nintendo’s support website.
